PERSONAL INJURY
Whether you’ve been injured in a car accident, bitten by a dog, or were hurt at a local business, the law states that you are eligible to recover damages. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to take the next step and ultimately get that other person to pay the damages due to cover things like medical expenses, lost wages and ongoing care. Here are a few basic steps you should take if you incur an injury due to the negligence of another:

- The first step is to identify the person who caused your injury. If you are in an automobile collision, call the police if you think you are hurt or your property has been damaged so you can get the collision documented, be examined by a paramedic and be sent to the hospital, if needed. If you are bitten by dog, learn the owner’s name and address. If you slip and fall at a retail store, report the injury to management, insist that they make a report and ask that they provide you with a copy! The best lawyer in the world can’t recover your damages if they don’t know from whom to seek a recovery.
- Above all, the most important step when injured is to seek medical attention immediately or just as soon as it is practical. If your injuries are critical, do not hesitate to get yourself to the nearest ER. Even if you are unsure how severely you are injured, it may be wise to go there anyway or schedule an appointment with your primary care physician as soon as possible. Urgent care clinics are another good option to document your injuries, initially. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your health, and it is critical to have your initial injuries well documented, in order to establish the basis of your damages.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
According to Georgia law, you may be eligible to recover both general and special damages when you are injured by another party. Special damages are those that can be itemized – your medical bills, lost wages, and other similar items. General damages are the non-specific items- such as pain and suffering. These are harder to define but still very real and The Edmonson Law Firm can help you determine what is fair.
As a general rule, you must either file a lawsuit in the correct court or settle your claim against the person who caused your injury within two years of the date of injury. Because every case is fact-dependent, there are occasional exceptions to this statute of limitations, so please call us at 678-271-9111 to discuss your unique situation.
